THE ART OF BLOCK PRINTING

The technique of printing fabric by stamping it with a wooden block dates back thousands of years. The design is hand drawn onto the wood and then carved with special tools. The block is used as a stamp and is typically 6" x 6". The process takes a lot of skill and is an art passed down from generation to generation. Artisans study for years before becoming a 'Masterji'.

PROCESS OF PRINTING BY HAND

The block is then given to the printers, a seperate artisan. The skill of these artists is astounding, as they need to match up the print exactly to create a more seamless pattern. One of the special qualities of a hand printed fabric is the "inconsistancies", which are what make the beauty of these fabrics, no two are exactly the same.

HANDLOOMED FABRIC

Most fabrics we wear today are made on a machine, but in India artisans still create fabric on a handloom. This is an intricate art and requires a skilled weaver. The strength of handloom lies in ease of introducing new designs, which cannot be replicated by machine loomed fabrics. The advantages of the loom are use of minimal power, eco-friendly quality, and flexibility of small production.
